{"id":1582,"date":"2020-06-20T22:30:29","date_gmt":"2020-06-20T22:30:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hsconsultinggroup.net\/hotels-what-adaptation-will-look-like-after-reopening\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T07:40:48","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T07:40:48","slug":"hotels-what-adaptation-will-look-like-after-reopening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hsconsultinggroup.net\/en\/hotels-what-adaptation-will-look-like-after-reopening\/","title":{"rendered":"Hotels: what adaptation will look like after reopening"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cWe recommend that, when reopening, our clients plan to have isolation rooms that are always vacant, clean, adjacent, and located on the same floor.\u201d<\/h5>\n\n<p>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Berrio, CEO of the international company HS Consulting, explains how hotels will need to adapt when they reopen to adjust to the new health situation. Berrio is a biologist and biochemist, an expert in microbiology, with 20 years of experience providing health and hygiene advisory and consulting services to hotel chains. HS Consulting currently has more than 400 clients in Spain, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, the United Kingdom, and Brussels, as well as two laboratories, one in Palma and another in B\u00e1varo (Dominican Republic).  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What measures will hotels have to take to be prepared for Covid-19 when reopening?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Hotels that implement effective Covid-19 prevention protocols sooner will build trust and confidence among tourists and tour operators, and will be the first to welcome guests again and recover from this crisis. At HS Consulting, we have created a Covid-19 Prevention Guide for tourism establishments, which includes specific training for all departments and information for guests. Hotels will need to stock up on personal protective equipment (PPE) and make adjustments in certain areas such as the buffet, kitchen, room cleaning, and common areas, and implement procedures to meet minimum prevention requirements. In addition, there must be public signage so guests are aware of the measures in place and can help ensure compliance. Based on our experience in several countries, this situation has led to greater awareness of hygiene in general, the importance of handwashing, and prevention from a health and hygiene perspective. In fact, hotels have Quality and Safety  Hygiene departments responsible for ensuring guest safety, and these will now need to be strengthened.     <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Will hotel guests need to be tested? If not, how would these tests be organized under this new situation? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>It is important to note that, when establishments reopen, a percentage of the population will already be immunized after the outbreak, and this natural immunization process would be complemented by the arrival of the long-awaited Covid-19 vaccine, which will be key to the sector\u2019s full recovery. As of today, there is no regulation requiring rapid tests, although Germany has proposed an \u201cimmunity card\u201d showing which citizens are immune to Covid-19 and therefore would be exempt from using PPE (masks, gloves, etc.). Having this information would be very valuable for hotels. Regardless of the use of rapid tests, health questionnaires for guests and staff will become widespread, including temperature checks. In addition, staff members who may be asymptomatic carriers of the disease, such as room-cleaning staff and food handlers, will be required to wear a mask while performing their work to control transmission of the disease.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>What extraordinary measures will be adopted for room cleaning?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Cleaning and disinfecting rooms, as well as all common areas of the hotel, was already essential to ensure guest safety. But now it will be even more so. We recommend that, when reopening, our clients plan to have isolation rooms that are always vacant, clean, adjacent, and located on the same floor, separated from the rest of the hotel\u2019s occupied rooms, in order to accommodate possible household groups (guests traveling together) who may show symptoms, or confirmed cases. Housekeeping staff must have personal protective equipment (PPE) at different levels and be trained in applying the protocol. The level of application will depend on whether there are suspected or confirmed cases of the disease in the hotel. For cleaning isolation rooms that house possible or confirmed cases, the housekeeping team must not include people in risk groups for the disease (over 60, diabetes, heart disease, immunosuppression, pregnant women, etc.) and must be equipped with full PPE (mask, gloves, eye protection goggles, and full suit). All rooms must be disinfected with products such as bleach at the appropriate concentration and alcohol-based disinfectants, and cleaning tools must be kept separate from one room to another, the use of disposable materials should be encouraged, and specific disinfectants and tools should be used for each area.      <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Do hotel buffets need to be eliminated?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The aim is to minimize any risk of infection. Buffets and restaurants are among the most critical points in the hotel, as they are places all hotel guests pass through. Capacity will need to be limited by setting staggered time slots, and the \u201cself-service\u201d concept will change completely. Guests should be prevented from serving themselves, so shared-use tongs will be removed. Instead, \u00e0 la carte dishes may be offered, in individual portions, or hotel staff may serve the food, minimizing the risk of infection. Alcohol-based disinfectants that are normally already located at the entrance to the restaurant will need to be installed at more points. Of course, all buffets must have protective screens and be kept at the appropriate temperature.      <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Should screens be installed at reception and in bars to reduce contact between guests and staff?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>Until there is a regulation governing this, the solution must be adapted to each case, as every hotel is different. Currently, there are fully open reception areas with no counter. The use of gloves and masks in all guest-facing departments will become standard, including reception and bars, and a safe distance from guests will need to be maintained. Frequently clean and disinfect all hand-contact surfaces, avoid sharing objects, prioritize and facilitate card payments (avoid cash). But it is not only reception: Covid-19 prevention protocols must be applied in all hotel departments, including SPAs and other common-use areas such as gyms, pools, etc.    <\/p>\n\n<p>Source:
